Souvenir, souvenir…

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I recently visited Nice and the Côte d’Azur. The weather was beautiful, although sometimes very hot, and as always, the food was great. One of the best things I know is to just wander around a supermarket in any country that I stay in and be amazed and inspired by all the foreign products that I see. I seldom even contemplate buying e.g. a packet of dry biscuits at home, but in France (or Italy, Germany, Japan or anywhere else), I actually consider it. Sometimes there is something about the packaging that intrigues me (smiling […]

French your way (my favourite French podcast) and the one time I spoke French fluently…

As part of my wish to be a little more French, learning the language is a must. Or shall I say, relearning. I once was quite fluent in the language. This was back in high school and the culmination was a trip to Paris with a good friend. On day 3 or so, the majority of our cash (hey, this was the 90’s, cash was king!) for the trip was stolen from our safety deposit box which was in the basement of the hotel (a 2 star, quite shabby hotel near Pigalle). I was so angry at the staff that I […]

A classic shirt dress – and why I always risk paying for excess baggage

I love shopping for fabric. For me (and if you are a sewer, you know what I mean), it’s like walking into a candy shop. (Granted, many times I get overwhelmed and leave from the most fantastic fabric shop with like a marking pen or something else ridiculously small and readily available everywhere.) I especially like going to fabric shops on vacation. There so much more to explore. (Did you see my post about my indredible luck in Paris a few years ago?) My hometown has fabric shops, yes, but bigger cities have bigger shops. Also, most of the time, they […]

A weekend in winter wonderland – my travel tips to Stockholm

If you are looking to get into some holiday spirits, forget the classic trips to Christmas markets in Germany or even hunting down Father Christmas in Greenland/ Lappland/ Rovaniemi/ North Pole or whatever Internet site you happened to stumble across (I am not judging..) claiming to be the real home of Santa. Go to Stockholm! Although here comes the obligatory disclaimer: as it is Sweden, the weather is moody at best so no guarantees for snow and sunshine. It was a combined business and weekend trip (those are the best, not for the business part though, haha) that had us visiting […]

A week in a cottage in Normandy – or when I found true happiness in a French supermarket

When we were planning our summer vacation, I was completely fixed on the idea to spend two weeks in northern France, driving from villages to villages, stopping at local farms to pick up produce and stuffing the car with antique finds from flee markets everyone would be envious of. As per usual, reality is never quite as idyllic as imagined. During our first week we stayed at a tiny cottage on the outskirts of a miniscule hamlet outside of Lisieux in Normandy. We had found it on Airbnb and the pictures were full of promises of the untouched romance of a […]
